What is osteoporosis?
In simple terms, osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become weak and can break from a minor fall or, in serious cases, from a simple action such as a sneeze. You can’t feel your bones becoming weaker, so you may not know you have osteoporosis until you break a bone.
Building strong bones during childhood and adolescence can help to prevent osteoporosis later in life. There are five steps, which together can optimize bone health and help prevent osteoporosis:

• Get the daily recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D. Some excellent sources for vitamin D are: Milk fortified with vitamin D, Fish, Egg Yolks, Liver and Fortified Cereals.
• Engage in regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercise. Check with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program.
• Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol. Talk to your healthcare provider about bone health.
• Have a bone density test and take medication when appropriate.
